University launches funded growth programme for small businesses
Government-backed course designed to boost leadership skills in SMEs
Businesses across Northamptonshire are being encouraged to sign up for a Government-backed leadership programme being delivered in the county for the first time.
The University of Northampton has launched the Help to Grow: Management course, a 12-week programme designed to help small and medium-sized businesses develop leadership skills, improve performance and identify opportunities for growth.
The course, which normally costs around £7,500, is 90% funded by the Government through the Department for Business and Trade. The university is also offering bursaries to some businesses, meaning eligible participants who register before 1 September 2026 could take part free of charge.
Dr Al-Amin Dabo, Associate Professor in Logistics and Supply Chain Management and programme lead at the university, said the course was designed to give business leaders practical tools to help their companies succeed.
"It's almost like a mini MBA for business leaders," he said.
"Over 12 weeks, it explores really practical, action-oriented material to support businesses to see opportunities for growth and scaling up.
"We know how tough it is running a business, particularly when you don't have a formal business qualification, so this course is about helping leaders make the most of their businesses."
The programme is being offered by the university following its accreditation with the Small Business Charter, which recognises its work supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Dr Dabo said the course could have wider benefits for the local economy by helping businesses expand, create jobs and strengthen key sectors.
"SMEs are the backbone of the economy," he said.
"We want to ensure we're equipping leaders with the skills they need to grow their businesses and contribute more to the economy by creating jobs, retaining jobs and hopefully establishing more businesses."
The course is open to businesses from any sector that have been operating for more than a year and employ between five and 249 people.
Participants complete two hours of online learning each week, alongside face-to-face workshops every three weeks. Businesses also receive one-to-one mentoring and access to a national alumni network.
More than 10,000 business leaders across the UK have already completed the programme, with many reporting improved confidence and stronger leadership skills.
Dr Dabo urged business owners to take advantage of the opportunity.
"It's the first time it's coming to Northampton and it's a fantastic opportunity for businesses to see how they could improve their processes, strengthen strategic leadership and grow," he said.
