Following a review by the West Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership (CSP), plans are underway to reinstate a CCTV camera at Wathen Wigg Bridge in Northampton to improve safety and crime deterrence in the area.

Previously switched off in 2013 due to maintenance costs and a lack of reported crimes, the camera’s necessity has been reassessed in light of several recent serious incidents.

The CSP, which includes West Northamptonshire Council (WNC), Northamptonshire Police, and other partners, has determined that enhanced surveillance is now required.

Cllr Charlie Hastie, WNC’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, remarked, "The safety and security of our residents is our top priority.

''While available evidence hasn’t always indicated a significant problem with crime, recent incidents have provided clear justification for reinstating surveillance."

The reinstated camera at Wathen Wigg Bridge aims to assist in preventing crime, managing anti-social behaviour, and offering reassurance to the local community. Hastie emphasised the collaboration with the Community Safety Partnership and the strategic CCTV review backing this decision.

Funding for the camera is currently being identified, with plans for installation expected within the following months.
