‘Virtual House’ tool aims to help people live independently
Interactive online tool shows how technology can support independent living
A new interactive “Virtual House” is being introduced to help people explore equipment and adaptations that could support independent living at home.
North Northamptonshire Council says the online tool will allow residents to see what assistive technology is available and how it could work in everyday life.
The Virtual House offers a 3D, room‑by‑room tour of a typical home, filled with specialist equipment, practical aids and home adaptations designed to support daily living.
Working in a similar way to Google Street View, users can move through different rooms and click on items to learn more about how they work and who they might help.
Examples include safety equipment in kitchens, mobility aids in bathrooms, and smart sensors and communication devices placed throughout the home.
Each item includes information on how people can refer themselves to adult social care teams or other organisations for further support.
Cllr Chris Kellett, North Northamptonshire Council’s executive member for adults and health partnerships, said the tool would make it easier for people to understand what help is available.
“We know that many people find it hard to know what equipment is available to help at home, or to imagine how it might fit into their own lives,” he said.
“The Virtual House makes this much simpler. It shows practical, everyday examples of things that can help people stay safe, comfortable and independent at home.”
He added that the technology allows residents and families to access information in their own time and make informed choices about their wellbeing.
The council says the Virtual House is designed to support people to live independently for longer and reduce the need for more intensive care in the future.
