Northamptonshire health director issues warning over open water swimming
Public health warning as temperatures are set to rise
A director of public health in Northamptonshire has shared her concern following reports young people are swimming in dangerous areas of open water.
In a letter posted on North Northamptonshire Council's website Dr Jane Bethea highlighted the dangers of swimming in spots known for their risks, including the Embankment in Wellingborough.
Her caution comes on the back of multiple fatalities across the country during last month's heatwave.
The council has alerted the local police and fire services about these activities.
Dr Bethea pointed out that many popular swimming areas aren't supervised and lack safety staff who can help if something goes wrong.
She advised against swimming, paddling, or jumping in areas that aren't designated as safe.
Some of the risks in these waters include cold water shock and hidden dangers like strong currents and submerged items.
"The water can and does kill," Bethea warned.
If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 999 straight away and use the What3words app to pinpoint the exact location if possible.
It's also advised to tell the person in the water to float on their back and try to throw them a buoyancy aid rather than entering the water yourself.
