With more students opting to stay close to home for their university education, Northampton College students now have increased opportunities to pursue degrees at the University of Northampton (UON) through a new progression agreement.

The collaborative agreement aligns courses between Northampton College and UON, providing students with more degree options and enhancing their chances of attending their local university.

Qualifications such as BTECs, T Levels, and HNDs from Northampton College will be mapped against UON's degree programs, allowing students a clear view of pathways from their current studies to university courses.

Professor Anne-Marie Kilday, Vice Chancellor and CEO of UON, aims to widen higher education participation and support learners in continuing studies locally, while reducing costs associated with moving away for education.

“The mapping process highlights how skills developed in one discipline can transfer into others, encouraging students to consider higher education as an achievable next step,” Professor Kilday said.

Jason Lancaster, Principal of Northampton College, emphasized the importance of higher-level skills in driving innovation and productivity for local businesses and public services.

“This agreement means students can progress to relevant degree and masters programs at UON, keeping economic and societal benefits local,” Lancaster said.

UCAS data from 2025 indicates a rise from 22% to 31% of UK 18-year-olds choosing to live at home during their studies, reinforcing strong local education pathways.

Students will continue applying through UCAS, with the agreement offering assurance that Northampton College students have a direct pathway to UON courses.

The progression agreement is part of the Futureskills Northamptonshire partnership, joining UON, Northampton College, and Moulton College to strengthen local skills development and enhance education pathways across the county.

This initiative underpins a collaborative effort to expand a skilled talent pool, making Northamptonshire an attractive prospect for innovative businesses, ultimately creating better opportunities for all residents.
