New healthy eating plan launched in West Northamptonshire
Its priorities include promoting healthier eating habits and reducing food insecurity
A new initiative focused on improving access to nutritious, affordable food for people in West Northamptonshire has been launched.
The West Northants Food Plan, unveiled by the West Northamptonshire Sustainable Food Network (WNSFN), seeks to address various food-related challenges.
The plan, developed with input from West Northamptonshire Council, the University of Northampton, local charities, growers, health professionals, businesses, and community groups, reflects extensive research and feedback from residents over two years.
Its priorities include promoting healthier eating habits, reducing food insecurity, supporting local food producers, minimising food waste, and encouraging sustainable practices in food procurement.
By supporting these actions, the plan aims to help families eat well for less and improve long-term health outcomes, ensuring that nutritious food is accessible in every neighbourhood across West Northamptonshire.
Nicola Toms, Chair of the West Northamptonshire Sustainable Food Network, said,
"This Food Plan is about making a real difference to people's everyday lives.
"By working together, we can help ensure that everyone in West Northamptonshire, whatever their circumstances, can access healthy food, feel supported and have a say in shaping their local food system."
Cllr Laura Couse, Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Public Health at West Northamptonshire Council, said,
"Access to healthy, affordable food plays a crucial role in people's health and quality of life.
"This Food Plan demonstrates our commitment to supporting residents to live healthier lives, tackling food insecurity and reducing health inequalities.
"By working closely with communities, local producers and partner organisations, we can build a food system that supports residents today while creating a more sustainable future for West Northamptonshire."
