A 48 year-old man, who chose to represent himself at court, has been jailed for 21 years, after he stabbed his housemate in Kettering.

In the early hours of January 1, 2024, Damian Szczecinski’s two housemates were celebrating the new year on the top floor of their Stamford Road house.

However, when one of them went downstairs to the communal kitchen, Szczecinski appeared, complaining about the noise. During the altercation, he became aggressive and, after a brief scuffle, he picked up a knife and chased the other man back to his room.

Szczecinski then attacked the door to the man’s bedroom with the knife, leaving multiple stab marks in the wood.

A short time later, the second housemate went downstairs where he was also confronted by Szczecinski and stabbed, in a completely unprovoked attack.

Police officers were called and Szczecinski was arrested and subsequently charged with attempted murder.

At his first trial, which started at Northampton Crown Court in June 2024, Szczecinski accused his solicitors of fabricating a prepared statement he gave in police interview resulting in the trial having to be stopped.

During rescheduled proceedings which took place at the same court between February 23 and March 4 this year, Szczecinski ended up representing himself, after making claims that his second legal team had told him what to say in court.

At the end of trial, the jury found him guilty of attempted murder.

He returned to the same court last week (May 22) where he was sentenced to 21 years in prison, as well as a further five on licence.

Lead investigator, Detective Constable Ali Ashford, said: “This was a shocking and completely unprovoked attack which left the victim with life-threatening injuries. Thankfully, he continues to make a physical recovery, and I would like to thank him for his support throughout our investigation.

“Damian Szczecinski’s violent actions have had a lasting impact on those involved, and this sentence reflects the seriousness of his offending.

“Tackling serious violence remains a top priority for Northamptonshire Police, and we are committed to bringing offenders like this to justice and protecting our communities from harm.”
