Man jailed after headbutting Northampton shop owner and stealing cash in robbery
Tafari Ingram admitted robbing the Stimpson Avenue Off-Licence
A man has been jailed for more than three years after admitting he used violence during a robbery at a Northampton shop.
Tafari Ingram, 29, headbutted the owner of the Stimpson Avenue Off-Licence before stealing more than £300 in cash.
What happened
Shortly after 10am on 21st January this year, Ingram walked into the shop and went to the fridge aisle, where he stole a Jamaican patty.
When he was challenged, Ingram became verbally abusive and headbutted the shop owner.
He then went behind the customer service counter and took more than £300 in cash.
The court case
The investigation led to Ingram being charged with one count of robbery.
On 14th March, he appeared at Northampton Magistrates' Court, where his case was committed to the crown court for trial.
Ingram appeared at Northampton Crown Court on 15th June and pleaded guilty.
He returned to the same court on 18th August, where he was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.
Police reaction
Investigating officer PC Jamie Longrigg, of the Northampton Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "This result was only possible through the collective efforts of officers and staff across a number of departments, working together and helping each other to gather evidence, arrest Tafari Ingram, support the victim, and build a strong case for prosecution.
"Nobody should have to face violence while doing their job, and I hope this sentence not only reassures retail workers that we take reports of violence and abuse seriously but encourages them to report such incidents to us."
