A man has been jailed for six years after his DNA was found on a gun hidden in a Corby park.

Jakub Sawa, 27, was sentenced at Northampton Crown Court this week on Monday 15th September.

He had been found guilty of possession of a firearm on 14th August, despite denying the offence.

The gun was discovered just before midday on 17th November 2025, when an off-duty PCSO was walking his dog in East Carlton Park.

He came across a canvas bag in a wooded area just off the path, which contained a firearm.

Armed police officers, detectives and specialist CSI officers were called to the scene to assess the weapon, which turned out to be a viable black handgun.

A forensic examination later found Sawa's DNA on the left-hand side of the grip.

He was arrested and, a short time later, charged with possession of a firearm.

Lead investigator Detective Constable Kieran Fowler said: "This was a significant discovery by an off-duty colleague, and I would like to commend his vigilance in reporting what he found. The firearm recovered from East Carlton Park was a viable handgun, and thanks to extensive forensic enquiries we were able to link it directly to Sawa through DNA evidence.

"Illegal firearms have no place in our communities. They have the potential to cause devastating harm, and we are committed to pursuing anyone involved in possessing, using or supplying these weapons.

"I am pleased that the forensic evidence presented to the court resulted in Sawa's conviction and that he will now spend a substantial period behind bars."
