Ahead of the British Farming Awards this week, we're hearing about how supporting British Farmers helps our own food security.

Annie Winn from Harlestone in Northamptonshire has worked in agriculture for a decade, with farming charities and with companies supporting Red Tractor, and a few years ago went freelance.

She now runs a social media company focusing on the agriculture industry, called She Sells Socials.

This Thursday 16th October she is up for Content Creator of the Year at the British Farming Awards 2025.

Annie says her main aim is to help spread awareness of why supporting local farmers, helps all of us:

"It's actually supporting something so much bigger it is supporting climate change it is supporting nature. It is supporting the food system so that we don't have a crisis here in the UK.

"You go into the shops and they say they're back British farmers. But you look at all the shops, it's all wrapped in plastic and it's been imported from Mexico... We're backing our own food security. We're backing our own health. We're backing our own NHS system."

Annie says the farming industry is much for modern and forward thinking than many people outside of it realise.

She says social media can be an educator when it comes to sharing farming issues and innovation:

"The industry is really modern and innovative and moving forward as quickly as the rest of the world, and everybody is really realising the importance of social media, whether that's actually to sell a product, just to raise awareness of what you're doing, to keep in contact with people within the industry because as you know, it can be a lonely place to be."

Among the other Northamptonshire nominees is Dr Johnny Wake the Managing Partner of Courteenhall Farms in South Northamptonshire, who is up for Regenerative Farmer of the Year.

Courteenhall Farms won the Gold at the 2024 British Farming Awards for their sustainability.

The event is being held at The Vox, NEC Birmingham.
