A man has been jailed after robbing a Kettering chicken shop while armed with a screwdriver.

Grant Callum Hussain, formerly from Kettering, was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for robbery and assault.

On the 1st March, Hussain entered the chicken shop located on Silver Street in Kettering and threatened staff with the screwdriver, according to court records.

After jumping over the counter, he took food from the shop and proceeded to eat the stolen chicken inside the premises until police officers arrived.

During his arrest, Hussain assaulted a police officer by kicking him in the legs and chest.

He was charged with robbery, possession of an offensive weapon, and the common assault of an emergency worker.

Hussain pleaded guilty to all the charges.

Detective Constable Megan Beattie, the lead investigator, commented on the incident.

“This was a brazen and threatening robbery that took place on a busy evening and had a real impact on hardworking members of our community who should be able to feel safe in their place of work," Beattie said.

“And Hussain’s actions didn’t stop there - he went on to assault a police officer who was carrying out his duty to protect the public.

“We are committed to protecting local businesses and taking robust action against those who bring violence into our towns. I hope this result sends a clear message that this kind of behaviour has serious consequences and will not be tolerated.”
