West Northamptonshire is set to receive greener public transport with a £2.2 million investment from the Labour Government, bringing 17 new zero emission electric buses to the region.

The initiative will replace older diesel buses and is aimed at reducing harmful emissions, improving air quality, and enhancing journeys for thousands of passengers traveling for work, education, and healthcare.

The plans are part of a broader £73.2 million Government investment across England, designed to support the transition to greener public transport and align with the net zero goals.

Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, "Buses are the backbone of our public transport system, and passengers in West Northamptonshire deserve a network they can rely on and be proud of."

Alexander added that the new electric buses will better connect passengers to crucial destinations while improving the environment.

The investment complements the landmark Bus Services Act 2025, which has empowered councils to shape local transportation networks and accelerate the switch to eco-friendly buses.

MP for Northampton South, Mike Reader, expressed enthusiasm for the development, saying, "This is fantastic news for West Northamptonshire and my constituency."

Graham Vidler, CEO of the Confederation of Passenger Transport, also welcomed the announcement, noting that it signifies a step forward for the UK's transition to greener transport systems.

The funding is supported by over £94 million of combined investments from operators on new vehicles and charging infrastructure.
