More than 8,700 packets of illegal cigarettes have been seized in West Northamptonshire this year as trading standards officers continue a crackdown on the illicit tobacco and vape trade.

The latest operation in Northampton and Daventry uncovered illegal products in all three shops visited, with officers discovering hidden storage areas concealed behind an electrically powered wall and hinged shelving.

Councillor Andrew Last, Cabinet Member for HR, Corporate and Regulatory Services, said: “This operation is part of sustained efforts to stamp out the sale of illegal tobacco and vapes that not only expose local communities to harmful substances but also undermines legitimate local businesses.

“Our Trading Standards teams will continue to work closely with the police and other partners to take firm, coordinated action against anyone who chooses to break the law and put the public at risk.”

Cllr Last said the findings showed the problem remained widespread across the area.

"Every premises visited resulted in seizures, which shows why this sort of targeted enforcement work really matters," he said.

The most recent raid resulted in the seizure of 616 packets of illicit cigarettes, 1.3kg of hand-rolling tobacco and 26 illegal disposable vapes.

It follows earlier operations in February and March, when officers confiscated a further 8,117 packets of illicit cigarettes, more than 41kg of hand-rolling tobacco and 852 illegal vapes.

Cllr Last said the council's work was aimed at protecting residents, young people and legitimate retailers.

"Illegal tobacco and vapes are not harmless bargains."

"They may be counterfeit, foreign-labelled, outside UK duty controls or fail to meet British safety standards." He added.

He added that illegal vape sales were a particular concern because they could undermine safeguards intended to prevent children and young people accessing age-restricted products.

The council said enforcement activity was intelligence-led and carried out alongside partner agencies, including police and national enforcement bodies.

The councillor urged residents to report suspected illegal sales, saying local information played a key role in helping officers identify offending businesses.

"The message is clear," he said. "If you're selling illegal tobacco or vapes in West Northamptonshire, we will take action."

Residents can report illegal tobacco and vapes activity to West Northamptonshire Trading Standards or by phoning the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133
