Runners in Northamptonshire will get to face a new distance at today's Shires and Spires event.

Around 400 runners will face distances from over 10k (roads), half-marathon, marathon and ultra marathon distances. This year a three-quarter marathon is new for 2025. Shires and Spires is run clockwise on even years and anti-clockwise on odd years.

Organisers tell us this is the most they've seen take part since a peak during Covid lockdowns.

The race began in 2009 and today's event is starting and finishing at Naseby Village Hall.

Simon Hollis is the Event Director and is encouraging spectators to come and cheer runners on:

"It is a truly beautiful part of the world, so we are pleased to be inviting people to the area."

Simon say the race immerses runners in local culture:

"They actually run past three stately homes. Cottesbrooke, Holdenby and Althorp. And also lots of really really pretty villages."

Althorp is the home of the Spencer family and final resting place of Princess Diana.

Simon says the race is known aims to be inclusive. In the past blind runners have previously taken part in the course:

"You think an event is tough, and then you think, if you were running with little to no vision, that is truly truly amazing."
