Northampton hospitals warn visitors to stay away if they have flu symptoms
To protect vulnerable patients, hospitals advise people to manage flu-like symptoms at home
The University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) have seen an increase in flu cases at Kettering and Northampton Hospitals.
According to Health officials, viral illnesses such as flu and colds are best managed at home with over-the-counter medicines or pharmacy advice.
Holly Slyne, UHN's Associate Director of Infection Prevention and Control, said: ‘’Every winter, we see an increase in flu cases, it's currently no different than any other year.
‘’We always ask for the public support at this time of year, and ask if they're not well to not visit the hospital. But for those that have serious conditions and need emergency treatment, the emergency department is always open .
‘’ For those feeling unwell with respiratory infection symptoms, the advice is to stay home, to rest, stay hydrated, and use over-the-counter medicines to relieve those symptoms.’’
Slyne said staff in the emergency department are currently wearing masks to help protect patients and visitors, and the hospitals welcome visitors to wear masks if they choose to.
‘’Masks are always available in the emergency department for visitors to use. And we particularly ask those with any respiratory symptoms, if they can tolerate a mask to wear one.''
Slyne also highlighted the importance of getting the flu jab and encourages those eligible to get vaccinated.
‘’The most important thing to stay safe this winter is to get vaccinated. To protect yourself, protect your family and protect your community.’’
