Prolonged dry conditions likely cause of Weekley Hall Wood wildfire

A two-acre woodland fire in Kettering was sparked accidentally during the recent heatwave and dry conditions.

Fire crews responded to the wildfire in Weekley Hall Wood at around 4:20pm on Friday (26 June).

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service has urged residents to stay alert, highlighting the potential for further incidents as warm weather persists.

"Incidents like this demonstrate how quickly fires can ignite and spread during periods of hot, dry weather," a spokesperson said.

Firefighters from Burton Latimer, Irthlingborough, Rothwell, Kettering, Towcester, Earls Barton, and Oundle attended the scene.

"Fires can become difficult to control if not detected early, and wind may carry embers, increasing the risk of further fires."

The service advised people to avoid lighting open fires in the countryside, use barbecues only in designated safe areas, and extinguish cigarettes properly.

Residents are also encouraged to dispose of litter responsibly, as items like glass bottles can ignite fires when exposed to sunlight.
