Alcohol-free options gain popularity this festive season
Survey shows more UK adults plan to moderate drinking over Christmas
Almost three-quarters of UK adults say they’ll keep a closer eye on their alcohol intake over the holidays, while 43% plan to cut back in the New Year, according to a recent Drinkaware survey.
While the findings highlight a national move towards moderation, Warner’s Distillery in Harrington, Northamptonshire, is also seeing this shift locally, with more visitors choosing low and alcohol-free options.
Tom Warner, owner of Warner’s Distillery, says he’s noticed a significant change in his customer’s drinking habits. He says:
“Low and non-alcohol sales is probably between 5% and 10% of the business. We've been doing this for 5 years and it started with a very low base. But the rate of growth is very high, currently.’’
Drinkaware reports that the most common way people are monitoring their alcohol consumption is by taking alcohol-free days. Other popular strategies include setting personal limits on how much they’ll drink and swapping alcoholic beverages for non-alcoholic or low-alcohol alternatives.
With more customers now asking for alcohol-free or low-alcohol options on his distillery tours, Warner believes this shift is set to continue and links it to adults putting their wellbeing first.
Warner added: “I think the general trends of health and wellness are here to stay, and I think that brings moderation on alcohol.
''Around 20% of people coming to our distillery tours are choosing t try our non-alcoholic options. This trend is not going anywhere.''
