Drink-driver jailed after being stopped outside Northamptonshire Police station
Man found over twice the legal limit in his vehicle
A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to 16 weeks in prison after being caught drink-driving outside a Northamptonshire Police station.
William Cawley, from Shadoxhurst, Kent, was discovered napping inside his black Land Rover Discovery by a Roads Policing Officer at the Pytchley Motorway Post at approximately 6am on 25th May.
Caught under the influence
Concerned for Cawley's wellbeing, the officer knocked on the window of the vehicle. When Cawley opened the door, she noticed a glass of liquid in the console and suspected he was intoxicated.
As the officer sought a breathalyser from a colleague, Cawley started the engine. He defied orders to switch off the vehicle and drove off, mounting the curb and narrowly missing a fence.
Attempted escape
Cawley continued to flee, driving through a leisure centre car park, on the wrong side of the road, and the incorrect direction around a roundabout before officers stopped him on Pytchley Lane.
Subsequent tests showed he had 74 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath, more than twice the legal limit of 35mg.
Court outcome
Cawley was charged with driving over the legal alcohol limit, driving while disqualified, driving without due care, lacking insurance, and failing to stop when directed by police.
He pleaded guilty to all charges at the Northampton Magistrates' Court on 26th May and received a 16-week jail sentence. In addition, he was disqualified from driving for 46 months and ordered to pay a £187 victim surcharge.
