A deer has been killed by two off lead dogs, a Northamptonshire wildlife reserve has reported.

Stanwick Lakes say the attack happened earlier this month in an area where dogs are allowed off-lead.

The dogs' owner didn't report what happened, so the deer was left suffering until someone visiting the site walked to the visitor centre and informed the rangers. The injuries were described as 'catastrophic'.

Stanwick Lakes is now putting up new signs around the site to help tackle ongoing issues with dogs misbehaving.

They're also working with the local Dog Warden to try to prevent incidents like this in the future.

Visitors are being reminded to be extra careful during spring, as ground-nesting birds are especially vulnerable and need protection:

"We love welcoming dogs to Stanwick Lakes - but we also have a duty to protect the wildlife that calls this place home.

"Please keep dogs on leads across the nature reserve. Only let them off in the designated area, and only if you're fully confident you can maintain close control," a statement on Facebook said.
