The death of a 17-year-old in the River Nene in Wellingborough, has been officially ruled as accidental by a coroner.

Ronalds Abele, was swimming with friends at The Embankment when he got into difficulty, leading to his rescue by emergency services.

He later succumbed to his injuries at Northampton General Hospital.

Circumstances of the incident

On 10th May 2024, Ronalds’ encountered difficulties as he swam in the River Nene.

Despite the warm spring day, unexpected conditions likely played a part.

Since then, his parents Thomas and Laura, have told us they are determined to prevent similar occurrences.

Thomas shared their grief, stating: "No family should have to go through this."

Motivated by their loss, they are active in promoting water safety campaigns for the community.

They have endorsed free lifesaving courses at Waendel Leisure Centre, focusing on cold water shock awareness and rescue skills.

Additionally, they have initiated a fundraiser to further aid awareness efforts.
