Corby MP calls for stronger workplace safety laws after steelworker's death
Lee Barron advocates for better health and safety regulations in parliament
Corby and East Northamptonshire MP Lee Barron has raised concerns over workplace safety laws in parliament following the tragic death of steelworker Kenneth Campbell-Smart.
Mr Campbell-Smart, 55, died at Corby Steelworks on 13th January 2026 due to an incident involving a side loader at the Tata steel tube works.
In a heartfelt address, Barron emphasised the necessity of robust health and safety measures, arguing their importance for safeguarding workers rather than hindering business operations.
He said: “Health and safety isn’t red tape, it isn’t bureaucracy, it isn’t a barrier to growth. It’s what keeps people safe at work."
The MP's appeal was made in the presence of Mr Campbell-Smart's wife, Sally, and son, Kian, who joined in the gallery, determined to prevent similar tragedies.
Barron called for bipartisan agreement on improving workplace safety in memory of Mr Campbell-Smart, "In the name of Kenny, his community, his workplace, and his family, we should strengthen these laws so it never happens again."
Leader of the house Rt Hon Sir Alan Campbell MP, responded to Barron's plea, extending condolences to Mr Campbell-Smart’s family and affirming the value of good health and safety practices. Sir Campbell also pledged that a minister would write to Barron outlining further government actions to address workplace safety.
Meanwhile, an inquest into Mr Campbell-Smart’s death has commenced at Northampton Guildhall, with proceedings opened by Senior Coroner Anne Pember on 30th January.
The initial findings pointed to chest and pelvis injuries as the cause of death, though more detailed reports are anticipated.
The coroner's inquest has been adjourned until 30th August 2026 to allow further evidence collection.
