A major book festival featuring free author events, storytelling sessions and creative workshops is set to take place across North Northamptonshire this autumn.

The BIG50 Book Festival will run from 16th to 25th October, bringing together libraries, schools, community groups and creative organisations for a 10-day programme designed to encourage people of all ages to read more and engage with literature.

Activities will be held in Corby, Kettering, Rushden, Wellingborough, Oundle and Irthlingborough, offering everything from baby and toddler Rhymetime sessions to author talks and creative writing opportunities.

Organisers say the festival will celebrate the power of reading and storytelling while making literacy activities accessible to residents across the area.

Families can take part in Gruffalo-themed storytelling and crafts, interactive Explore-a-Story sessions and special BIG50 library events aimed at inspiring a lifelong love of books among young readers.

The festival will also showcase local creative talent, with residents able to meet authors including Juliet Timpson and Amir Ali. Events are being delivered in partnership with organisations including Writing East Midlands, Made With Many and the University of Northampton.

Dr Robin Webber-Jones, chair of the BIG50 board and deputy chief executive and executive director of curriculum at The Bedford College Group, said the festival would highlight the benefits reading can bring to people's lives.

He said: “Reading has the power to inspire, educate and connect people, opening doors to new ideas, experiences and opportunities.

“The BIG50 Book Festival will showcase the wealth of reading, storytelling and creative activities taking place across North Northamptonshire, encouraging people of all ages to discover or rediscover a love of books.”

He added: “Whether it's a young child enjoying their first group storytime, a family taking part in activities at their local library, an aspiring writer meeting an author, or someone exploring new creative skills, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.”

Information about events, booking details and the full programme is available through the BIG50 website and social media channels.
