A historical murder investigation has been launched into the death of a woman whose body was found in the bath at her home 25 years ago.

The body of Rhonda Anderson was discovered in the Briar Hill area of Northampton on July 8, 2000, with an inquest held later the same year ruling her death was an accident caused by electrocution when a radio fell into the water.

In a statement confirming that a murder probe has been launched, Northamptonshire Police appealed for friends with relevant information who knew Ms Anderson to come forward.

The 29-year-old's family are being supported by officers after being informed of the fresh investigation, following the emergence of new information.

Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison said: "Rhonda died at home in July 2000, when an investigation took place and a report was prepared for the coroner, who ruled at the conclusion of an inquest that Rhonda's death was accidental.

"However, new information has come to light this summer which has prompted us to re-examine what happened to Rhonda and a formal murder investigation is now under way."

Friends of or those who knew Rhonda, a shop and bar worker who had worked at a jewellery store, are urged to contact police with any information which could assist the inquiry.

Relevant information which has come to light since Rhonda's death is also being sought.

Ms Harrison said: "A significant amount of time has passed since Rhonda's death, but I am hopeful that anyone who may have any information about her life or what may have happened to her will still have clear memories they can share with us.

"It doesn't matter how insignificant you think the information you recollect is, we want to hear from you as we explore the circumstances of what happened.

"This development has obviously come as a huge shock for Rhonda's family who are being supported by specially-trained officers and have asked for privacy at this difficult time."

Anyone with information about Ms Anderson or what may have happened is urged to call Northamptonshire Police on 101 or to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
