The latest Air Quality Annual Status Report shows that of the seven Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) in the region-zones previously failing to meet national air quality standards-only one location now exceeds the legal limit for nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

It added that four AQMAs where levels had seen continued improvements would be revoked early next year.

They include Victoria Promenade, Campbell Square and St Michael's in Northampton, and Watling Street in Towcester.

Bradshaw Street in Northampton has seen improvements in nitrogen dioxide levels.

Council officials confirmed that areas showing sustained improvement will lose their AQMA designation in early 2026, a move expected to reflect cleaner, healthier local environments.

The council credited these improvements to initiatives encouraging cleaner travel options for residents.

Green Party Perspective:

Dave Pearson, co-chair of West Northants Greens, noted that while most of the region now meets UK air quality standards, the thresholds are relatively weak, allowing levels up to four times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommendations.

The council continues to encourage cleaner travel choices to protect public health and the environment.
