Plans for a bypass around the village of Isham have been removed from the Government's list of major road projects.

The Department for Transport confirmed the decision in a letter to North Northamptonshire Council.

It said the A509 Isham bypass had been taken out of the Major Road Network and Large Local Majors Programme following a national review of road projects.

The Government said it had inherited a programme of unaffordable and unfunded schemes and had prioritised projects it considered offered the highest value for money.

The Department has confirmed the project could be considered again in the future if a suitable funding opportunity arises and a compelling business case is available.

The council has long supported the A509 project, which was designed to reduce congestion, improve journey times and support economic growth across the area.

It has described the decision as a significant setback and said it remains committed to securing the infrastructure investment its communities need.

The council will now review the details of the Government's decision and consider its next steps before making any further announcements.

Cllr Chris McGiffen, the council's Executive Member for Highways, Travel and Assets, said:

"This announcement is extremely disappointing, not just for North Northamptonshire Council but for the many local residents, businesses and road users who have supported the A509 Isham Bypass for a very long time."

"The need for this scheme has not gone away. The bypass has long been recognised as an important project that would help ease congestion, improve connectivity and support the continued growth of our local economy."

"While we are naturally frustrated by this decision, we remain committed to securing the infrastructure our communities need. We will now carefully consider the reasons given by Government, explore all available options and determine what steps can be taken next."

Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council, said:

"The A509 Isham Bypass is a scheme of significant importance to our residents, businesses and the wider economy of North Northamptonshire."

"I fully share the frustrations and bitter disappointment of the residents who have waited many years to see progress on the project."

"However, we are not prepared simply to walk away from a scheme that could bring such substantial benefits to the area."

"I'm fully committed to not giving in on this and we will continue to make the case for investment in North Northamptonshire and work constructively with Government and partners to understand the options available. We owe it to our communities to continue pursuing every opportunity to deliver the infrastructure needed to support future prosperity."
