A45 expected to be closed until at least 8pm
Detectives investigating the fatal road traffic collision on the A45 in Northampton say they're continuing to work at pace
Detectives investigating the fatal road traffic collision on the A45 in Northampton say they're continuing to work at pace to complete a thorough investigation and reopen the road 'as soon as possible'.
The incident happened at 1.50am this morning (August 18), when a female pedestrian facing westbound on the bridge over the A45 between Great Billing Way and Crow Lane fell into the eastbound carriageway and was in collision with a number of vehicles as a result.
She died at the scene.
Detective Inspector Nick Peters from Northamptonshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “The A45 is a key route for many people travelling through Northamptonshire, and we fully appreciate the impact this closure will have on motorists and the wider community.
“That’s why I want to reassure the wider public that officers and specialist investigators are working as quickly as possible to carry out their work and reopen the road as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.
“However, this is a fatal collision in which a woman has tragically lost her life, and whilst we are not treating her death as suspicious, it is vital that we carry out a meticulous and thorough investigation. Ensuring we gather all available evidence and treat the woman who died, and her loved ones, with the dignity, care and respect they deserve must remain our priority.
“We are making every effort to balance those responsibilities with the need to minimise disruption, and we would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while this important work continues.
“We will continue to keep the public informed and will be issuing an update later this evening with what will hopefully be a more accurate road reopening time.”
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is asking to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have any relevant CCTV or dash cam footage.
Anyone with information is asked to email [email protected] or call the Drivewatch Hotline on 0800 174615, or Northamptonshire Police on 101.

The A45 between the Wilby Way roundabout and the Bedford Road junction is expected to be closed on both sides until at least 8pm this evening (August 18). Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find an alternative route.
A temporary air space restriction has also been put in place meaning no unmanned aircraft systems (drones) can be flown within 500meters of the A45’s Billing Bridge until 4pm tomorrow (August 19).
