140 e-scooters and e-bikes taken off Northampton’s streets
Police operation targets vehicles used in anti-social behaviour
More than 140 e-scooters and e-bikes have been confiscated from Northampton’s streets under a police operation targeting suspected criminal activity.
The initiative, named Operation Journey, was carried out by Northamptonshire Police’s Safer Roads Team, with assistance from the National Police Air Service, over five days between 14th March and 28th March.
Police undertook the operation in response to reported crimes and public complaints about e-scooters and e-bikes being ridden in an anti-social manner across Northampton.
Northamptonshire Police released a video compilation demonstrating their tactics and showcasing their commitment to address concerns raised by local residents.
The operation resulted in eight arrests for failing to stop, and several detentions, including one person suspected of possessing an offensive weapon and another of domestic stalking.
A stolen vehicle was also recovered during the enforcement.
Chief Inspector Johnny Davis-Lyons from Northamptonshire Police’s Operations Team highlighted the importance of responding to community concerns.
He said: “Crime associated with e-bikes and e-scooters is an issue often raised not only to our neighbourhood policing teams but also to our Chief Constable, and it’s important that communities can see that their voices are being heard.
"I am really pleased with the results of Operation Journey, and I hope they demonstrate how seriously we take those concerns as well as our commitment to keeping Northampton’s streets safe for everyone."
Davis-Lyons added that the operation also focused on serious crimes including possession of knives and domestic abuse.
