Newcastle foodbank are urging the government to scrap the two-child benefit cap
They say it will have a huge impact and help reduce pressure on families
Newcastle foodbank say scrapping the two-child benefit cap will make a meaningful difference to families across the region.
They are calling on the government to lift the limit in the budget next month.
John McCorry is the Chief Executive of the foodbank. He explains about the impact it will have and why it is important.
He said: "Particularly for people on universal credit and the gap that has been created. This is forcing more and more children into hardship over a period of time.
"The government have put in measures to reduce child poverty, and they are welcome, but we think this one single measure will make a meaningful difference.
"It would give children that better start in life that government and the health practitioners are talking about because it will help them and their families in the early years to have a good start in life, which is so important for everyone.
"Those early years are so vital and if children do not have the opportunity to explore new opportunities, eat healthy diets, get the proper education and childcare that is needed then they really are hindered at that point where so many others are able to excel."
