Calls for speed limit on a County Durham road to be reduced following the death of a teenager

There are calls for the speed limit on a County Durham road to be reduced following the death of a young woman who was killed in a collision on her 18th birthday.

Abbie Devanney died in a crash on Brooms Lane near Consett, almost 3 years ago.

Her sister Amy has now set up a petition calling to change the speed limit from 60mph to 30mph to stop other families going through the same heart ache.

Amy said: "I decided to start a petition to change the speed limit on Brooms Lane, which is where Abbie lost her life, because it's currently 60mph and it is an awful road.

"It's massively affected by the weather, it floods and obviously it was a storm that night, so part of the collision was because there was a huge puddle on the road."

Amy says that she has not only lost her sister, but her best friend, maid of honour, Auntie to her future children and the ability to make memories with her.

She continued to say: "As I've been raising awareness, I've had a lot of people reach out to me, especially those who are living along that road, who have young kids and they say that they don't feel safe because of the speed limit.

"People don't treat it as a limit, they kind of treat it as a target and it's an awful road, it's very windy.

"Where Abby passed away, there's a lot of different memorials, so it's obvious that other people have lost their lives and I think something needs to be done about this road before more people lose their lives on it as well."
