Local musical sensation Sam Fender has been put forward for the Freedom of the Borough of North Tyneside.

North Tyneside Council’s Conservative opposition has recommended the star for the civic honour for his musical contributions and for being “true ambassador” for North Shields in particular. The news of the nomination comes just weeks after Fender scooped a third Bit Award for best alternative/rock act off the back of his most recent album, People Watching.

The North Shields singer has long drawn inspiration from his roots, incorporating local iconic venues such as the Low Lights Tavern and Nautilus pubs into his work. He also headlined North Tyneside Council’s 2019 Mouth of the Tyne Festival.

Leader of the Conservative opposition, Coun Liam Bones, said: “I am delighted to have nominated Sam Fender for the Freedom of the Borough. Sam is not just an incredible musician, but a true ambassador for North Shields and the wider borough. Through his music, he has told the story of our community on a global stage, shining a light on the challenges we face whilst celebrating the resilience and spirit of the people who live here.”

If approved, Fender will join the likes of other Tyneside legends including Sting, real name Gordon Sumner, who was originally awarded the same honour in 2010 and later collected it in November 2023 owing to a “robust” touring schedule.

A meeting to discuss Freedom of the Borough nominations is scheduled for Monday evening at the closed portion of an overview and scrutiny committee at North Tyneside Council’s Cobalt HQ.
