Police appeal for information after fatal collision on A1 in Northumberland

Driver in his 80s dies and passenger critically injured after crash

Police are appealing for information following a road traffic collision on the A1 southbound at Belford, Northumberland.

The incident occurred just after 4.10pm on Friday, when a white Hyundai i30 reportedly joined the A1 from the junction with the B1342 and subsequently collided with a car transporter lorry travelling south.

Emergency services attended the scene, where the driver of the Hyundai, a man in his 80s, was sadly pronounced dead.

His next of kin have been notified and are receiving support from officers.

A female passenger in her 70s sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Following the incident, a section of the A1 was closed for several hours to facilitate vehicle recovery and conduct investigative work. The road has since fully reopened.

Northumbria Police has launched a comprehensive investigation into the collision and is urging anyone with information to come forward.
