A predatory paedophile has been jailed after sexually abusing a teenager.

Daniel Curtis, 40, abused the girl at an address in Newcastle after first engaging the victim into sending a string of sexually explicit messages on social media.

Curtis’ offending came to light after the messages between himself and the victim were discovered.

A report was made to police, and Curtis was arrested and questioned.

Following a long and complex investigation by specialist officers, in 2022, Curtis, of Hugh Gardens, Newcastle, was charged with a string of child sex offences.

However, in an attempt to evade justice – Curtis repeatedly failed to appear at court leaving him wanted by Northumbria Police.

Curtis was apprehended, and following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court in May, he was found guilty of seven offences of sexual activity with a girl.

Following his conviction, he was subsequently remanded into custody.

And on Friday (July 25), he returned to the same court where he was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment.

Curtis will also spend the rest of his life on the Sex Offenders’ Register and was handed a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). He was also given a lifelong restraining order to protect the victim.

Following Curtis’ conviction in May, the victim shared these words:

“What Daniel Curtis did to me has had a big impact on my life.

“It was really scary for me having to go through a police investigation.

“It was hard to speak about what happened and having to see what I had thought of as being a loving relationship was something totally different and recognising it for the criminal act it was.

“There was two times that I tried to take my own life during the investigation. Everything became too much for me, and I felt like I’d be better off dead than having to deal with it all.

“When he was found guilty, a weight was lifted off my shoulders.

“He had made me feel guilty for so long even though I know none of this was my fault.

“It was a relief knowing that other people could see that he was the one who was guilty, and now I might be able to stop feeling like that myself and start getting back to my normal self.”

Detective Constable Claire Ashurst, of Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding Department, led the investigation.

Speaking after Curtis’ sentencing, she said:

“First and foremost, I’d like to praise the victim for the bravery she has shown throughout this process and working with us to build a case against Daniel Curtis.

“As a Force, protecting and supporting vulnerable victims is our top priority and we will continue to work incredibly hard to put offenders such as Curtis before the courts.”

Det Con Ashurst added:

“I’m sure everyone can take some comfort in knowing that a dangerous man is behind bars. Not only that, but he will be monitored by police for the rest of his life."
