Police are investigating a collision on the A189 Spine Road in Cramlington last night, which left an officer with life-threatening injuries.

Officers received reports of the crash, near Moor Farm Roundabout, just after 11:10pm on Monday, 8th June.

It is understood that a silver Land Rover Freelander had been involved in a collision with a white Ford Explorer on the southbound carriageway. The Ford left the road and the occupants of the Land Rover fled the area on foot before police arrived.

Emergency services attended where no serious injuries were reported in the initial incident.

A black Mercedes CLC has then collided with a marked Northumbria Police car that was on the southbound carriageway. Subsequently, an officer was taken to hospital for treatment for serious injuries and remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the Mercedes – a 73-year-old man – was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and he remains in police custody at this time.

Assistant Chief Constable Helena Barron, of Northumbria Police, said: “Our thoughts are very much with the officer, their loved ones and all those impacted by what has happened. We will continue to support their family and colleagues at this difficult time.”

Officers from the Force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit have since launched an investigation. They are especially keen to hear from any witnesses who were travelling in the area at the time, and those who may have dashcam footage.
