Officer assaulted with 'bladed article' in South Shields
A man has been arrested.
A 25-year-old man has been arrested after a police officer was assaulted with a bladed object in South Shields this afternoon.
The incident occurred shortly before 12.35pm on Saturday in the King Street area. Two officers on duty approached the man, described as a person of interest, when he attacked one of them, causing cuts to their face.
The officer was taken to hospital for treatment for injuries that are believed to be minor.
The man was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and remains in police custody.
Police have increased their presence in the town centre as they continue their inquiries into the incident and provide reassurance to the community. Authorities have confirmed there is no wider risk to the public.
