A Newcastle based music artist hopes the MOBO Awards will leave a lasting legacy and help inspire young people from diverse backgrounds.

The region is getting ready to host the MOBO Awards ceremony at the Utilita Arena, which will help celebrate black music and culture.

Kay Greyson, rapper from Newcastle, said: "I grew up watching the MOBOs. It means a lot to me to have on such a big scale and big stage, black music being celebrated and black culture being celebrated. It was something that was always aspirational for me.

"Performing in Newcastle is the best place to perform the crowds always bring the energy in. We're musical city. We love music here. People always want to go and have a listen to something new. They're willing to give things a try, so it's amazing to perform here.

"I want my performance and the work that I'm doing in the community to leave a legacy that if you have a dream or you have a passion and you want to give it a go, you can get up and do that. You can use your passion to make the world a better place, make things brighter and happier for other people.

"A lot of the kids are already involved in this world and already interested in hip hop and rap, so showing them that that is a valid interest, and that's something that they can pursue as a career, or they can just enjoy for themselves.

"This is just the beginning. The MOBOs coming here has put us on a platform where the whole country, the whole world is going to be looking at us, and we've got the talent to back that up. I hope their eyes are on us because we've got something real special coming."
