The identity of a man who sadly died as a result of an assault in Newcastle has been confirmed - with a suspect due in court charged with his murder.

At about 4.50pm on Wednesday, March 5, police attended an address on Bolingbroke Street in the Heaton area following a report of concern for a man.

Emergency services attended where they found 31-year-old Michael Craig, who had sustained serious injuries.

He was taken to hospital where he sadly died a short time later.

Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team immediately launched an investigation with one man arrested on suspicion of murder.

Craig Howse, 38, of Bolingbroke Street, Newcastle, has since been charged with the murder.

He is due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (Saturday).

Detective Chief Inspector, Katie Smith, of Northumbria Police, said: “Firstly, our thoughts remain with Michael’s family as they begin to process their loss.

“Our specially-trained officers will continue to provide them with the support needed.

“Over the past 48 hours, extensive enquiries have been carried out and I’d like to thank everyone involved for their dedication to this case.

“With a suspect charged with Michael’s death - I’d ask everyone to respect the ongoing legal proceedings by avoiding any commentary or speculation that could undermine the case.

“I would also like to thank members of the public who have came forward with information already. If you do have any information and are yet to get in touch, please come forward.”
