We are hearing just how much impact big sporting events like the women's Euros has had on the hospitality sector in the North East and Teesside.

Thousands of people tuned in to watch the Lionesses play Spain last night.

Many of those were at STACK - the container village entertainment hub - in Middlesbrough, Bishop Auckland, Durham, Newcastle, Seaburn, and Whitley Bay.

Gemma Dishman, Project Development Director, said: "I think in England people want to get behind the team. The further they progress you see from the start there might be a few people like die-hard fans comes out and watch it and then as they progress through the tournament, you see more and more people getting involved and getting to a final is so positive for the hospitality trade because more people come out.

"Hospitality is hugely affected by the results of these games so I appreciate the pressure they must feel on the pitch, but also the pressure there is wider than football of how much of an impact economically it can have on the hospitality industry.

"People want to go out and they want to have a good time. If there's a win you have an even better time and when you're having a really good time you want that feeling to continue and you want that experience to last, so absolutely you see the knock-on effect beyond that actual matchday. People want to continue celebrating.

"It helps bring people out, bring people togeether and it impacts communities with families and kids. We've got a lot of kid events on at our STACK venues so if they've had a good time once, they're more likely to return to try and emulate that experience.

"STACKs are phenomenally busy when there's a big sporting event. I think that's because in STACK, it brings people together, it's a large space where people can come and enjoy watching the football and have that kind of stadium atmosphere feel without actually being there."
