Record 85 Women Take to the Start Line for Newcastle Women’s Aid
Female cyclists were out in force in Stamfordham on Saturday morning at a cycling time trial hosted by Blaydon Cycling Club.
The riders set off at 1-minute intervals to complete a 12.2-mile course on some of Northumberland’s quieter roads.
Organisers say the event has so far raised over £3,000 in support of domestic abuse chairty Newcastle Women's Aid.
Elaine Langshaw, CEO of Newcastle Women’s Aid, said: "There was a huge buzz in the air, at headquarters in Stamfordham Village Hall.
“To see so many women come out and ride in support of women and girls was empowering and truly inspirational.
"A raffle was also held & very popular, it ensured this amazing event, raised over £3,000 which will be used to directly support women and girls who need to use our specialist domestic abuse service.
"The event may very well save lives.”
Participants were also encouraged to bring along items of female toiletries which are too often needed when vulnerable women and children have to relocate at very short notice.
Elaine added: “We left in a car bulging with essential toiletries.
“The cycling community, both male and female, has been incredibly supportive and we are massively grateful.”
Neil Wilkinson, from the Blaydon CC, said: "It’s been great to see the response from the North East cycling community for such a deserving cause.
"We had riders of all abilities join us and it was wonderful to see so many smiling faces back at HQ.
"We’re delighted that 85 women finished.
"There is no official record for female participation in a club time trial but, we are sure that before Saturday, the largest field locally, was 27, and nationally, it was 74 so we’ve easily surpassed those numbers.
"We couldn’t be prouder of what we as a club, and the charity have achieved.”
