North East families tell us how they welcome the Mayor's £28.6 million investment plan to tackle child poverty across the region.

Yesterday North East Mayor Kim McGuinness announced the investment will include grants for expectant mothers, baby boxes and new activities for young people to support them towards work.

Karen is a grandparent in the North East and believes it is a brilliant idea.

She said: "To get parents out and about to interact with other parents and to get the children out and about away from the TV's, away from their iPads, and to mix with other children. I think anything that helps is great.

"The cost of childcare and care after school is astronomical. If it helps some parents get back to work, who wouldn't otherwise be able to, I think it's a massive thing.

"If my daughter didn't have me for childcare it would be the difference between, would it be worth her working or not.

"She works three days a week. She's a nurse. She's lucky that she can work from home. However, if she had to pay for one wraparound care for a child at school and a little one full time childcare, I don't know if it would be worth her working."
