At around 3.15am on Thursday, December 26, it was reported that a vehicle was on fire on Marsden Lane, in the Newbiggin Hall area of Newcastle.
Emergency services attended the scene, and the fire was extinguished a short time later.
No-one was reported to have been injured in the incident, which is being treated as suspected arson.
Extensive enquiries have been carried out since the report was first received and today (Wednesday) police are appealing to the public for information.
They are particularly keen to speak to a man who was believed to be in the area at the time of the report. He was wearing dark clothing and carrying multiple bags.
He was last seen walking near a block of flats at the junction of Etal Lane and Lazonby Way.
