Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman in her 70s died following a collision involving two vehicles on the A69 in Northumberland.

The crash reportedly happened shortly before 1.30pm on September 26 on the stretch of the A69 between Haydon Bridge and Hexham.

Police say a black Honda was travelling westbound when it was involved in a collision with a blue Volkswagen Tiguan heading in the opposite direction.

Emergency services attended the scene, where the passenger in the Volkswagen, a woman in her 70s, was pronounced dead.

Her family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.

The driver of the Honda, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The road was closed for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident and investigators examined the scene. It has since reopened.

Officers from Northumbria Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit have launched an investigation into what happened.

Sergeant Greg Huntley, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident where a woman has lost her life. The thoughts of everyone here at Northumbria Police are with her loved ones.

“Our investigation is underway, and we are now appealing for further witnesses who we have not yet spoken with to come forward.

“We know this is a very busy stretch of road in Northumberland – and there will have likely been many motorists passing in both directions.

“If you were in the area or have any information that might help with our investigation, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Anyone with information, particularly those with CCTV or dashcam footage, are urged to contact police.
