The University of East Anglia is to cut 163 full time equivalent roles to cope with financial pressures.

In a letter sent to staff, the UEA's Vice Chancellor Professor David Maguire said that following a series of meeting with their Campus Trade Unions - one of the outcomes is three voluntary schemes put in place, which are:

  • Voluntary Pay Reduction for Senior Staff
  • Unpaid Career Break
  • Voluntary Redundancy Scheme

The Vice Chancellor goes on to say that because of the design of the plan - it will lead to the reduction of 163 full time equivalent roles across the University, which it hopes will be achieved through the 'targeted voluntary redundancy programme.'

The reductions are as follows:

  • 26 in Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
  • 22 in Faculty of Science
  • 17 in Faculty of Arts and Humanities
  • 2 in Faculty of Social Sciences
  • 97 across Professional Services

Ending the letter, Professor David Maguire says these are not decisions that any of the team want to be taking, but unfortunately, they must be done to secure the UEA's long-term future.

In a statement, the UEA spokesperson said“Regrettably, we need to identify savings of £11m to stay on track with our financial sustainability plan. These are not decisions that any of us want to be taking, but unfortunately, we must make them to secure UEA’s long-term future. We have now concluded our collective Trade Union consultation phase about the overall proposals and move to the next phase, which is individual consultations with staff in impacted areas.

“Staff have been informed that the proposals include a goal for reduction of 163 full time equivalent roles across the University which we hope will be achieved through a voluntary redundancy programme targeted at a minority of selected areas across the University. Compulsory redundancies will always be a last resort.

“We remain committed to high quality student education and experience, and we will work hard to limit any impact on students.

“These incredibly challenging decisions have not been taken lightly and we recognise that this is really difficult news for our UEA community.”
