Spinal team in Norfolk to complete 180-mile challenge for specialist kit
Team tackles fundraiser to support young patients with scoliosis
The Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity has raised £660,000 towards an appeal to acquire a pioneering imaging system to benefit children and young people with scoliosis.
To help fund the remaining £181,000 needed for the EOS imaging system, the N&N spinal surgery team is embarking on Spineathlon 2026, a challenging 180-mile journey across Norfolk.
Starting on 4th September 2026, the Spineathlon will see the team traveling by kayak, foot, and bicycle to support the charity's Spinal Appeal.
The route includes kayaking down the River Yare from Norwich towards Gorleston, marching from Great Yarmouth to Sea Palling and Cromer, Holkham, Hunstanton, and finally cycling from The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn back to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
The walk from Great Yarmouth to Sea Palling will also include participation from spinal surgery patients, families, and supporters.
The EOS imaging system offers a vital solution by providing precise full-body images with reduced radiation exposure, aiming to improve care for children and young people requiring frequent spinal imaging.
Consultant Spinal Surgeon Tom Marjoram explained the importance of the EOS system, noting its ability to reduce radiation exposure by approximately 80%, a crucial factor for safeguarding children who undergo repeated imaging:
"Children are more vulnerable to radiation, particularly around sensitive areas such as the abdomen and pelvis, so reducing exposure wherever possible is incredibly important."
