Three robotic colorectal cancer surgeries completed in a day at Norfolk hospital
NNUH sets a surgical milestone with advanced robotic procedures
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing three major robotic colorectal cancer surgeries in a single day.
This accomplishment marks the first time such a feat has been achieved in East Anglia, placing NNUH among a select few hospitals in the UK capable of performing these complex operations rapidly.
Prof Irshad Shaikh, Consultant Colorectal and Lead Robotic Surgeon, praised the collective efforts of various teams involved, highlighting contributions from anaesthetic colleagues, cancer nurse specialists, and the operational team, among others.
Prof Shaikh said, "It shows how using these advanced tools and technology can improve efficiency in the operating theatre to benefit our patients."
He also thanked the N&N Hospitals Charity for supporting the development of the hospital's robotic programme.
Henry O'Connor, Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at NNUH, noted the day was marked by excellent teamwork, particularly when managing complexities during the procedures.
He said "There were some complexities with the first two patients, but the team in theatre worked swiftly and efficiently to deliver safe and effective care to all three patients.”
All three patients had their cancer fully removed and have been discharged from the hospital.
