A £3 per day food budget challenge is taking place this October 16th to 18th , encouraging people to experience budgeting for food with a minimal amount while donating the difference to support community meals.

Organised by Eat Social Norfolk, the challenge is inspired by the Big Sleep Out model, aiming to raise awareness about food insecurity and its impact on families, especially in Norwich.

Participants are encouraged to donate what they would normally spend on food and are urged to seek sponsorship from friends, family, and colleagues to amplify fundraising efforts.

The initiative raises essential funds for community meals projects and highlights the everyday reality of food poverty faced by one in six families in the UK.

The challenge is a short-term effort to inspire reflection and support ongoing projects, regardless of whether participants can complete the challenge.

Eat Socials Founder, Lisa Vincent, emphasises the urgency of addressing food poverty, stating, "It's unacceptable that children are malnourished, and we must take steps to address this even if it's a small gesture."

" I think if people knew that we have kids who are malnourished and can barely walk in parts of Norwich, they would kind of want to do more to help,

But we can't have that. In 2026, we can't have that. And I personally find it so unacceptable that that is happening and I cannot not try to do something, even if it's a tiny little thing."

Even if people cant complete the challenge, Lisa hopes it opens up the conversations around food poverty in Norfolk.
