Three pensioners kayak Norfolk rivers to support rural mental health
Charity volunteers embark on a yearly challenge to raise funds and awareness for rural communities and farmers
A group of pensioners are kayaking the rivers of Norfolk, aiming to raise both awareness and funds for mental health services in rural areas.
The trio are part of a fundraising effort they are calling "Three Old Men and a Boat," organised by the local charity You Are Not Alone (YANA).
YANA focuses on providing support to farmers and rural communities, encouraging them to access mental health services.
This marks the third year that the volunteers, aged 72, 86, and 87, have taken on this challenge.
One of the fundraisers, 72 year old, Henry Kilvert says taking on this is about more than raising money:
"For me, its about spreading awareness, showing people what they can gain from us, and get support that they need "
The kayaking initiative has already raised £22,000 over the last two years and seeks to empower individuals in rural communities to realise they are not alone when it comes to mental health challenges.
Charity Director, Robin Hepburn, said its more important than ever to raise awareness,
"In the first 6 months of 2026, our call lines are up 33%, that might be a good sign, but its also a recognition of greater need"
Robin said that Norfolk's farming community is facing increasingly tough times:
"You have to be able to face things as a farmer, but you don't have to face them alone, or deal with it yourself,
sadly our farming community is under greater pressures than ever, with legislation, costs and climate change."
Robin also mentioned rising costs, changes in legislation, and climate change among some of the challenges facing our local farmers.
Among the three volunteers is MBE Roderick Hunt, a British children's author. Best known for his series 'The Magic Key'.
