A 48-year-old man from Norwich has been convicted of murdering his neighbour following an argument.

Elvis Vickers, of Mousehold Street, was found guilty today (11th December) by a jury at Norwich Crown Court of murdering Abdul Chadli in November 2024.

During the trial, the court heard how Vickers and Chadli, who lived in adjacent flats, had been drinking together at Vickers’ home on the evening of 1st November 2024.

The two men started arguing about current affairs, and shortly after 10pm, Vickers texted a friend, writing "just to let you know, I just killed Abs." He then called 999, stating, "I've got a dead body in my flat, mate" and later added, “Yeah, I killed him.”

When police arrived, Chadli, originally from Hertfordshire, was found with a single knife wound to the chest. He died at the scene.

Vickers claimed he acted in self-defence and did not intend to kill Chadli. However, the court heard how Vickers had been consumed with "anger and hatred" and stabbed his neighbour with "force and intent."

The jury delivered a unanimous guilty verdict after the trial, bringing the investigation to a close.

Detective Inspector Sam Pontin described the killing as "senseless" and expressed hope that the conviction provides some justice to Abdul Chadli’s family and friends.

"Our thoughts remain firmly with Abdul's family and friends and hope today’s conviction brings them some measure of justice," DI Pontin said.

"This was a senseless act of violence which should never have happened. We remain committed to tackling violent crime and ensuring those who commit such offences are held accountable."

Vickers will be sentenced in the new year, with the date yet to be confirmed.

"We miss him and love him"

The family of Chadli issued the following tribute to him:

“It is so very very sad that such a kind, caring and gentle guy was taken so violently from his friends and family.

“I wish we could tell him how much we miss him and love him and how every day we wish we had appreciated the short time we got to spend with him.

“He used to have long spells away working at sea, now we just must try to imagine that this trip will be a little bit longer, but we will see him again one day.”
