Norwich honorary life president Michael Wynn Jones, husband of Delia Smith, has died at the age of 85.

Wynn Jones and former television chef Smith were joint majority shareholders of the Norfolk club until October 2024, when they stepped down as directors and handed control to American billionaire Mark Attanasio.

A statement on the Canaries’ website read: “Everyone at Norwich is deeply saddened by the passing of our honorary life president, Michael Wynn Jones.

“Michael died peacefully at home on Monday morning, aged 85. He will be greatly missed.

“His family are grateful for the wonderful care provided by the community nursing team at St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich.

“Our deepest condolences are with Delia and Tom, and with all of Michael’s family, friends and loved ones.

“At the family’s request, we ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.”

Former Norwich forward Darren Huckerby posted on X: “Such sad news, he stayed out of the limelight but all at @NorwichCityFC owe him so much. My thoughts and best wishes to Delia and family.”

James Maddison and Todd Cantwell were among many former Norwich players to comment on the Canaries’ Instagram post, Tottenham midfielder Maddison writing “Rest in peace Michael” and Blackburn’s Cantwell adding “Honour to have been in your presence, rest easy Michael”.

Broadcaster and Norwich fan Jake Humphrey commented: “I’m really saddened by this. Michael was always such a kind man to me. Always offering a warm handshake and keen to talk about the club he loved deeply.

“I’ll always remember the glint in his eye when discussing the latest player to score a goal for us or a recent win. His love for Delia also shone through.”
