A North Norfolk MP is calling on the Government to deliver ring-fenced funding for small rural schools ahead of todays Budget.

Steff Aquarone said the way schools are currently funded doesn't work for rural and coastal areas.

"Government pays schools based upon how many pupils they have," Aquarone said. "That might seem sensible, but in rural and coastal areas, it's just not enough to keep the lights on and pay the teachers."

It comes after Corpusty Primary School closed earlier this year.

"We lost Corpusty Primary School tragically earlier this year," Aquarone said. "I said at the time it was the canary in the coal mine and there are now parents in villages across North Norfolk who are worried about whether their school is going to be the next to close."

He said he fears it will be too late if action isn't taken soon.

"If we don't seek urgent action, I think and I fear it will be too late," Aquarone said. "The way the government calculates funding for schools just doesn't work for rural areas and I'm calling for ring-fenced funding in the budget specifically to keep these rural schools going and make sure they can stay open and keep rural village life viable for families."

In an earlier statement, Aquarone said rural schools were 'more than just bricks and mortar'.

'They're often the heart of our communities,' Aquarone said. 'Where life-long friendships begin. Where memories are made. Where dreams and opportunities are ignited.'
