Grindstore, an online retailer based in North Norfolk, has experienced a significant decline in EU orders after new customs costs were implemented in July.

The company reports a 61% fall in orders compared to the same period last year, with the numbers dropping from 6,128 to 2,371.

North Norfolk MP Steff Aquarone visited Grindstore on 16th October to discuss the impact directly with the team.

According to Grindstore, additional customs and handling costs have compelled them to increase delivery charges substantially.

Director Martin Glover highlighted the challenges, noting they had improved product listings and expanded the European business, only to see progress undone by external costs.

Grindstore has been operating for around 16 years and employs 25 people in Norfolk.

Since the new rules came into effect, the average shipping charge on orders denominated in euros has jumped from €4.09 to €11.07.

Aquarone plans to bring the collected evidence to Parliament, stressing the need for clearer guidance and practical support for affected businesses.

He states that Grindstore’s struggle is indicative of widespread issues faced by UK exporters.

Grindstore mentioned receiving short notice from their previous European courier, necessitating a rapid change in delivery arrangements.

The UK Government is reportedly monitoring implementation and liaising with businesses and European authorities.

An additional EU-wide handling fee on e-commerce goods is anticipated from November.

Aquarone seeks to ensure clearer information is given to businesses before further changes occur.
